What is a Domain Name and how does it work?
A domain name is a unique address or set of words/names that is used on the internet. The set of characters you see in a web browser after “https://” or “www.” (or what comes after the “@” sign in your email address) is your domain name.
A domain name consists of two parts, namely the top-level domain (TLD) and the second-level domain. For example, in “myname.com,” the “.com” is known as a top-level domain. It can be country-specific (co.in, co.jp, co.uk, etc.) and can be targeted as per geographic location. The second-level domain is your actual name, that is, “myname” in this case. Your second-level name can be up to 60 characters long and can be used with any country-specific TLD.
How does it work?
Every computer/server connected to the internet has a unique IP address (IP stands for Internet Protocol) consisting of a set of numbers, for example, 195.201.20.201. If you need to connect to a computer through the internet, you should know its IP address. Since IP addresses, as a string of numbers, are not easy to remember, domain names are used. The domain name you enter in the browser address bar resolves to the IP address of your server, which is connected to the internet (or hosted in a data center). The Domain Name System (DNS) automatically translates the domain name entered in a browser into the correct IP address.
Tips for choosing and registering your Domain Name
– Use your Industry/segment in your domain name
– Select an Appropriate TLD
– Keep the name as simple as possible so it can be remembered.
– Keep the domain name as short as possible.
What is Whois ID Protect for domain names?
When you register a TLD with a registrar, you need to provide detailed information such as your name, email address, phone number, etc., and the same is recorded in a database, which is available online. Whois ID Protect is a service where personal information about the domain owner can be kept private. This feature is available with most of the TLDs. We at Hosting Options offer Whois ID protect services for free to customers who register their domains with us.
